Odessa Russian Theatre is the oldest theater in the southern Ukraine and it was built in 1874 by a merchant Alexander S. Velikanov and was intended for performances of a provincial actor and entrepreneur Nikolai Karlovich Miloslavskiy drama troupe. On the stage of Russian theater in Odessa played great Sarah Bernhardt and Eleonora Duse, Benoit Coquelin and Jean Mun-Sully, Maria Savina Vladimr Davydov, Mary Zankovetskaya and Mark Kropyvnytskyi etc. Before the revolution there were many Russian, Ukrainian, German, French, Italian, drama, opera and operetta troupes.

Odessa Russian Drama Theater (1926) was finally registered in this building in Soviet times . In the troupe over the years worked outstanding actors. On the stage of the Odessa Russian Theatre for the first time in the power of the talents played Michael Astangov, Daria Zerkalova, Vladimir Samoilov. There was a big part of the creative life of Nikolai Komissarov, Nikolai Volkov – senior, Leah Bugova, Pavel Mikhailov, Boris Seidenberg etc. Hier worked talented directors - students of Meyerhold Abram Rubin and Alex Gripich, Abraham treplev and Alexander Solomarsky, Vladimir Bortko - Senior and Victor Strizhov etc.

In 2003 the theater reopened after nearly two years of renovation and repair. Today in Odessa Russian theater performances are staged by masters of Russian and Ukrainian directing Leonid Heifetz and Edward Mitnitskiy, now working in Moscow and St. Petersburg - Joseph Raihelgauz , Boris Milgram, Georgy Kovtun , Russian filmmakers - Anatoly Praudin , Alexei Girba , Alexei Litvin. There are four National Artist of Ukraine - Lyudmila Satosova , Andrew Potter , Simon Krupnik, Oleg Shkolnik, ten honored artists of Ukraine , a lot of young people in the troupe. There are Richard III by William Shakespeare and School for Wives by J.- B . Moliere, The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov , Anna Karenina by Tolstoy , modern dramas in the repertoir . The anniversary season of 2004-2005 the Theatre opened by three primieres - dramatization of the famous novel by Stendhal entitled Red and Black (a stage version and direction by Alexei Girba ) , a modern melodrama by A.Mardan Waiting list (director - Joseph Raihelgauz) and the original version of the drama by M.Remarka E. Last stop , which is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Great Victory (stage version and directed by Alexei Litvin)
